The Minnesota Nurses Association Foundation (MNAF) is now accepting scholarship applications for MNA Members or Associate Members in good standing for the 2020-2021 academic year. As Chair of MNAF, it is a great honor to give these scholarships to deserving MNA members!

Our recent Educator of the Year award was presented to Yisehak Tura, MS, RN, OCN, who received one of our scholarships and now teaches nurses. What a way to pay it forward! He is still an active Union Member who works part-time as a bedside nurse as well.

For years the MNA Foundation has supported nurses in their pursuit of continuing their academic careers. MNA members have completed BSN programs, become nurse educators, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists; they have earned master’s degrees, doctorates and PhDs all in the pursuit of advancing the nursing profession and taking patient advocacy to new heights.

Today the foundation is thrilled to announce a new and very exciting scholarship, named in honor of our country’s first African-American graduate nurse, Mary Eliza Mahoney. The Mary Eliza Mahoney scholarship will provide financial support to a fellow union member who wants to become a nurse and a member of the MNA.

The Mary Eliza Mahoney Memorial Scholarship provides funds for a member of another union in the pursuit of a nursing degree.

The Mary Eliza Mahoney scholarship, named in honor of our country’s first African-American graduate nurse, will provide financial support to the member of another union who wants to become a nurse and a member of the MNA. The Minnesota Nurses Association recognizes that myriad institutional and structural barriers keep many people from a nursing career.  The Minnesota Nurses Association Foundation (MNAF) wants to foster the creation of a diverse team of nurses that reflects the diversity of our communities.

As a nurse, many of us have a nurturing ability within us. During my years of nursing, I found that when I shared my acquired knowledge with others, I supported my colleagues’ growth. My passion to learn became deeper, my professional practice became stronger, and patients and their families received better care.

 

I returned to Creighton University in Omaha to achieve a higher level of autonomy in the nursing practice, support my passion for lifelong learning, and gain more knowledge to share with others. I will graduate in May 2019 with my Acute and Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, which might not have happened without receiving an MNA Scholarship.

All other positions are appointed by the MNA Board of Directors.

Though the Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act did not pass due to the Mayo exemption poison pill, MNA was able to push through a few significant provisions from the bill. This bill includes comprehensive workplace violence prevention measures, student loan debt forgiveness for registered nurses and nursing teaching faculty, a study on why nurses are leaving the bedside, and scholarship coverage for childcare for individuals completing registered nurse degree programs.  

What’s Included in the Workplace Violence Prevention Provisions? 

  • This new law improves the workplace violence prevention language that was already in statute by creating stronger requirements for what needs to be evaluated as workplace hazards and risk factors in hospital violence prevention plans created by an action plan committee who is mandated to obtain the active involvement of healthcare workers.

As the DFL trifecta celebrates the major accomplishments from this legislative session, they should not forget they left nurses behind and allowed corporate greed to further diminish work to retain nurses at the bedside and provide quality care to their patients.

Now is the time for nurses to stand together to remind legislators that the treatment of nurses during this session is deeply alarming and that they owe nurses meaningful legislative to push against the further corporatization of healthcare and give nurses a meaningful voice in how they can best care for their patients.  

We are currently hosting a statewide tour to engage with as many members as possible about what transpired during this pivotal legislative session and hear from members about what policies should be at the forefront of our work for the next legislative session.

The Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act (KNABA) is a bill designed to address the hospital short-staffing and retention crisis. The conditions that hospital CEOs have created are driving nurses away from the profession and hurting patient care. Chief-authored by Senator Erin Murphy (DFL, St. Paul) in the Senate (SF 1561) and Rep. Sandra Feist (DFL, New Brighton) in the House (HF 1700), the Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act puts patients and workers before profits to fix the under-staffing and retention crisis while improving the quality-of-care patients receive at Minnesota hospitals.

Frazier recognized alongside MNA nurse members honored for their outstanding efforts

(St. Paul) – November 12, 2021 – Last evening, State Representative Cedrick Frazier was honored by nurse members of the Minnesota Nurses Association with MNA’s 2021 Public Official Award. Rep.
