Stories we’re scanning:

Health Care

  • MHA Questions Validity of Patient Safety Data: The Star Tribune notes that a new attempt by a consumer group to give hospitals a letter grade when it comes to patient safety is being pooh-poohed by the Minnesota Hospital Association. Fear not, because we have a solution: Want to know the truth about patient safety at your hospital? ASK YOUR NURSES!
  • Summer Camp = No Nurses?: A controversial New York law apparently prohibits RNs from being present at Summer Camps for children.

Labor

  • CNA Nurses Set June 13 Strike Date: Registered nurses will hold a one-day strike Wednesday, June 13 for Bay Area hospitals operated by the wealthy Sutter corporation, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United recently announced.  Sutter continues to demand more than 100 widespread, unwarranted reductions in patient care conditions and RN economic and workplace standards, despite rolling up nearly $4.2 billion in profits since 2005.
  • Locked Out Crystal Sugar Workers Head to Company HQ: Locked out members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers’ International Union (BCTGM) from American Crystal Sugar factories in the Red River Valley will conclude a 200-mile journey from Drayton, ND, to Moorhead, MN, today with a march and vigil in front of company headquarters. Workers and supporters have traveled by foot and in a tractor-drawn hay wagon over 200 miles in seven days to draw attention to the ongoing lockout – which is at 10 months and counting – and its impact on their communities. They are calling on the company—a farmers’ cooperative—to engage in genuine negotiations when the two sides meet on June 8th.
