(St. Paul) – January 21, 2025 – Last week, a group of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in Center City, MN have voted overwhelmingly to join the existing Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) as a new bargaining unit.

The bargaining unit of 56 nurses includes 11 LPNs and 45 RNs, and each group voted in strong support of unionizing. This decision comes in response to growing frustrations among nurses, particularly after management removed benefits for employees working under a .75 full-time equivalent (FTE).

“This is a proud moment for Hazelden nurses,” said Megan Albrecht, an RN at Hazelden. “The union protects our rights as nurses and promotes fairness, inclusivity, and transparency in the workplace.”

The nurses’ decision to organize reflects their shared commitment to improving workplace conditions, advocating for fair compensation, securing benefits, and prioritizing patient safety. By joining MNA, Hazelden nurses have strengthened their position to address long-standing concerns about equitable treatment and sustainable workloads.

“Having a union represent us gives back our voice, benefits, and ultimately safety for us and our patients,” added Crystal Olson, an RN at Hazelden.

With this victory, Hazelden nurses join a growing community of healthcare professionals united under MNA. The newly formed union gives Hazelden nurses a seat at the table to engage in meaningful dialogue with management and advance their collective priorities.

“Having MNA representing us gives us a seat at the table so we can make decisions about our wages, benefits, and safe working conditions,” said Jody Burton, an LPN at Hazelden.

By standing together, Hazelden nurses are paving the way for a workplace that values the contributions of all caregivers while ensuring the resources needed to provide the highest quality care for their patients. This election win is a testament to their dedication to creating a more just and supportive healthcare environment for both staff and patients alike.
