RN Strikes and Patient Safety: Some Shocking Statistics
Hospitals are quick to say it’s no big deal if RNs are on strike and that patients are as safe as ever. However a new study by the National Bureau of Economic Research finds that RN strikes increase in-hospital mortality by 19.4% and 30-day readmission by 6.5% for patients admitted during a strike. The study suggests that hospitals functioning during nurses strikes are doing so at a lower quality of patient care.

The brand-new, completely redesigned MNA Web site will be going LIVE this Wednesday, April 7, 2010! We hope you enjoy the new look and feel of the MNA site and that it provides you the information you need in a fast, friendly and easy-to-follow manner.
Two important changes to the new site include:
- Print, Save as PDF and Share buttons on every page of the MNA Web site.
- Moving several “Members-only” pages of content over to the new myMNA Member Portal, which will provide a customized, safe and secure environment for the MNA Member pages you use most.

HealthEast Home Care Nurses Vote to join Minnesota Nurses Association
ST. PAUL (April 1, 2010) – Registered Nurses working for HealthEast Home Care voted today to formally organize and join the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA).
“It is a great day for the Home Care nurses here at HealthEast,” said Kelly Rogalsky, one of 55 RNs working in HealthEast’s Home Care program. “We’re excited to join MNA and have formal union representation. We look forward to bargaining with our employer for a contract that ensures the well-being and safety of our patients and allows us to give our patients the best quality of care possible.”
HealthEast’s Home Care program provides at-home care and nursing for patients across the Twin Cities.

Hundreds of Minnesota Nurses to Rally Saturday
Gathering in Hopkins focused on patient safety, advocacy as nurses continue contract negotiations with area hospitals
ST. PAUL – More than 900 Minnesota nurses are expected to gather Saturday for a boisterous public rally focused on the importance of patient safety and advocacy as RNs continue contract negotiations with several Twin Cities hospital systems.
“On the heels of the historic healthcare legislation passed earlier this week, attention is focused on this industry like never before,” said Minnesota Nurses Association President Linda Hamilton, who works as an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.
