SMDC Duluth Bargaining Update (June 10)
1. The employer (SMDC) was not prepared to respond to our proposals, presented 2 weeks ago which include staffing.
2. MNA told management that the number of open shifts on the new schedule was unconscionable for a facility of its size and as a trauma center.
3. The employer data validates a significant decrease in the number of RN’s, the number of FTE’s and full time positions.
4. MNA informed the employer they would request a meeting w/ JACHO w/ pending site visit over staffing and safety issues.

June 11: View from Inside Methodist Hospital
On Friday morning, Methodist Hospital returned striking nurses back to work — but it wasn’t a smooth transition for patients or nurses. Nurses filed a number of Concern for Safe Staffing reports as well as internal quality tracking reports about compromises in patient care. Nurses anxious to return to their patients on med-surg floors were held in conference rooms for as long as two and one-half hours and when they finally got to the floor, found that patients hadn’t received morning medications on time and that other patient care needs hadn’t been met in a timely manner.

MNA Organizer Assaulted by North Memorial Security Guard
Without warning, MNA staff member Ona Keller, 23, was physically assaulted by a security officer this morning at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN. She sustained neck and arm injuries in the assault and was admitted to the North Memorial Emergency Room, where she was treated and released a few hours later. Keller, who works with North Memorial nurses as an organizer, peacefully and quietly walked into the hospital’s public lobby shortly after 7:00 a.m. Friday with other RNs, marking the end of a 24-hour strike for patient safety. She was accompanying North Memorial nurses as a show of support for those RNs walking back into the hospital to report for work.

Breaking News: Hospitals Violate Contract, Won’t Let Nurses Return to Work (June 11)
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn4ncR93Nq4]
Several Twin Cities Hospitals illegally locked out Twin Cities RNs today by not following language in the labor contract regarding how Twin Cities nurses are supposed to be called (or not called) back to work. Some hospitals also did not follow the contract language dictating that nurses are supposed to be called back by seniority. MNA has filed Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges with the National Labor Relations Board.
Hospitals involved include:
- Abbott Northwestern – Illegally locked out at least 60 RNs
- Children’s Minneapolis – Illegally locked out at least 12 RNs
- Children’s St.
Support from Flight Attendants Union!
On behalf of over 7,200 flight attendants at pre-merger Northwest Airlines (now Delta Air Lines), I convey our group’s message of solidarity and support for the Minnesota Nurses. Some of my colleagues and I attended the vigil last night in Saint Paul and we were inspired by the energy from the speakers and those in attendance. It shouldn’t surprise any of us that so much of our focus is the same, no matter what the industry. Staffing, wages, working conditions, recognition — all of these important themes are shared struggles within our movement.
The flight attendants at Northwest (Delta) have had collective bargaining rights for over 62 years.
