(St. Paul) – March 31, 2022 – Minnesota nurses released a new report today – “Why We Left: 2022 Nursing Workforce Report” – which identifies poor hospital management and chronic short staffing as the top issues driving nurses away from bedside care. In a roundtable discussion at the State Capitol today, nurses who retired early or left full-time bedside care positions shared stories of their experiences, including why they left and what it would have taken for them to stay.

(St. Paul) – February 2, 2022 – At 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022, Minnesota nurses will join Senate Minority Leader Melisa López Franzen (DFL-Edina), Senator Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul) and Representative Liz Olson (DFL-Duluth) to announce new legislation to address the hospital short-staffing and retention crisis.

In recent weeks, hundreds of nurses spoke out about the conditions in Minnesota hospitals. Minnesota nurses are overwhelmed and overworked, hospitals are understaffed, and patients are overcharged by hospital executives trying to boost their bottom lines.

In August, nurses were informed that at least one major healthcare system employer was about to release results from a project they completed on “National Benchmarking.” This project has resulted in drastic proposed cuts to RNs, NAs, and other staff on most of the inpatient care units. At the same time, nurses up north were experiencing the same circumstances when they rejected unsafe assignments.

In response, MNA members asked for more tools and resources to be made available to nurses while in the middle of a staffing crisis.

Here in Minnesota we are rightly focused on the elections that will decide the direction of our state for decades to come. We are working hard to elect pro-union leaders who will protect the right to collectively bargain contracts. In Minnesota and across the country, healthcare has become the number one issue for voters.  Costs continue to skyrocket; high deductible insurance plans drain more and more of individual families’ hard-earned money; and politicians continue to threaten protections for pre-existing conditions. The state of healthcare is not sustainable, and we need to demand change that puts the patients at the center.
