MNA offers a wide range of learning opportunities at no cost to expand your personal and professional growth through the Continuing Education Program. Our classes provide invaluable time to engage with other MNA members, share ideas and collectively problem solve. All MNA classes are designed to meet Minnesota Board of Nursing continuing education requirements.

Topics include:

Advocacy and solidarity are the source of our strength as union members. Learn how to be an effective MNA steward and leader in your bargaining unit and beyond.

NOTE: Bargaining units can request in person steward trainings from their labor rep with the ability to host other potential stewards from nearby facilities if necessary.

Representing Members at Investigatory Meetings: Learn how to represent MNA members in disciplinary and investigatory meetings. Examine the application of Weingarten Rights, the equality principle and duty to fair representation.

Step-One Grievances: Learn to identify grievances and gather the necessary evidence for an effective step-one meeting. Practice preparing and presenting a grievance to ensure the best outcome.

Succeeding as a MNA Steward: This training is designed to help all stewards succeed in their day to day role as a MNA Steward while continuing to build their own skills in leadership, organizing and communication. Instructors will share best practices on navigating this role as you work with our members, other stewards and management.

Upcoming classes

Learn to recognize situations that risk patients’ lives and nurses’ licenses. Hone the skills necessary to reject unsafe assignments and foster a culture on your unit that consistently advocates for appropriate staffing in order to protect your patients and your practice.

This class will briefly recall the history of the MN Nurse Practice Act (NPA), describe the elements of the NPA, discuss disciplinary action, including grounds and possible actions, including nursing practice case examples.

Imagine a hospital or a clinic whose every policy and procedure reflect the highest standards of nursing ethics. Does the facility where you work reflect that? What should MNA members do when they are asked to violate their professional code of Ethics? Join us for this course to discuss pressing ethical issues at the bedside and in healthcare more broadly.

This is a class to review workplace violence in nursing, to help nurses find ways to cope with the aftereffects of workplace violence and to discuss ways to advocate in an effort to prevent further nurse injury due to workplace violence.

Commission on Nursing Practice and Education Book Club for Nurses

This Commission provides guidance on ethical dilemmas present in day-to-day nursing practice and sponsors a Book Club where members discuss books that address a nursing and ethical principles.
