Facebook (FB) and other online platforms can be very powerful tools for communication and even organizing. It can also be a dangerous place. Your MNA Board of Directors created a policy initially back in 2017, with a most recent update occurring May 2021. A lot has changed with social media in the past several years. There are some risks and legal liabilities for both individuals and our organization around using social media platforms. This training will familiarize you with the policy and ways to use social media that build power for nurses while protecting yourselves and the organization.

This workshop will provide a brief overview of the anti-vax movement in the United States. We will map some of the key actors in the movement and consider how their agenda conflicts with the values of union nurses and patient advocates. We’ll examine the roots of movement’s individualistic rhetoric in the historical oppression of marginalized groups, and we’ll conclude by looking at the threat this movement poses to workers, public health, and democracy as well as how union nurses can fight back.

“Duty of Care: One Doctor’s Story of the COVID-19 Crisis” by Dr. Dominic Pimenta (2020)
This is a nonfiction account of a doctor’s experiences working in a National Health Service (NHS) ICU ward during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and much of the book focuses on the events that occurred in March and April of 2020. It provides some great insights into the struggles that the NHS faced at the beginning of the pandemic, which only worsened as the case count climbed.
