Nurses are making clear that they want elected officials who will show up with actions, not just words, to put patients before profits. Elected officials are in a unique position to hold hospital executives accountable to patients and nurses; we need to hold those officials accountable to us. To build accountability with candidates, we need to build electoral power among nurses. As hospital executives are cutting checks to candidates and whispering in elected officials’ ears, candidates need to hear our voices and feel our power, so they remember who they are accountable to.
