Nurses will speak out on the effects of corporate healthcare policies on patient access to care
(Rochester) – September 11, 2023 – Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 12, 2023, nurses with the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) will turn out and testify at a listening session in Rochester hosted by Attorney General Keith Ellison on aggressive, abusive, and deceptive corporate healthcare billing practices that can compromise access to care for Minnesota patients.
“Hospital executives are driving nurses away from the bedside, pushing Minnesotans into debt and putting patient care at risk with their focus on the bottom line,” said Mary C. Turner, RN, MNA President, who will speak at tomorrow’s meeting. “It is time for nurses and patients to stand together to demand that our hospitals work for the people of Minnesota, not the wealthy and powerful CEOs.”
Recent stories in the media have exposed harmful billing practices by Minnesota hospital systems. At Allina, executives denied care to patients who have medical debt. At Mayo, executives take patients to collections who should have qualified for charity care and charge patients hidden fees based on where they receive their care.
MNA nurses are on the frontlines of the fight against corporate policies pushed by hospital executives that put the bottom line ahead of patients and nurses at the bedside. This past legislative session, nurses led the fight to secure new regulations on harmful hospital mergers that often result in higher prices, lower wages, and less access to care. In a historic strike of 15,000 nurses last year, MNA nurses took a stand against the corporate policies that deprive patients of adequate nursing care and drive nurses away from the bedside.
