We’re excited to let you know that UMN professor of Bioethics, Carl Elliott, is planning to attend the January 17 Book Club to discuss his book, White Coat, Black Hat: Adventures on the Dark Side of Medicine. Even if you do not have time to read the book before the meeting, the conversation will explore important topics in healthcare today. Amazon reviews describe the book as “a readable and even funny account of the serious business of medicine. A tongue-in-cheek account of the changes that have transformed medicine into big business. Physician and medical ethicist Carl Elliott tracks the new world of commercialized medicine from start to finish, introducing the professional guinea pigs, ghostwriters, thought leaders, drug reps, public relations pros, and even medical ethicists who use medicine for (sometimes huge) financial gain. Along the way, he uncovers the cost to patients lost in a health-care universe centered around consumerism.”
In the event that Carl Elliott is unable to attend we will discuss the book for January, “The View from Flyover Country”. This is a great opportunity for us that Carl Elliott has agreed to come to our meeting and discuss his book “White Coat, Black Hat”. If we have time we can discuss the book for January. See you on January 17th.

The View from Flyover Country: Dispatches from the forgotten America by Sarah Kendzior (2018)
A piercing critique of the labor exploitation, race relations, gentrification, media bias, and other aspects of the post-employment economy that gave rise to a president who rules like an autocrat. The View from Flyover Country is necessary reading for anyone who believes that the only way for America to fix its problems is to first discuss them with honesty and compassion.
